The Thing I Promised to Write for the Thing

“You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.” (Ps.51:6)

An individual can do a lot of book learning in his or her life and yet still never know a darn thing.

Oh yes, of course, a college degree can assist in getting a good job…and reading books — that’s just part of the joy of living.

But the real learning often comes from the still quiet voice within. God is always trying to get our attention, but often he is gently whispering to us, competing with the noise and chaos of the outside world that we all must negotiate every day. And, alas, a lot of the time, we don’t hear him.

Sometimes people turn to “Life Coaches,” New Age gurus, Dr. Phil or Oprah to magically try to find answers to their questions about the disturbing emotions or events in their lives. And sometimes little tidbits like, “How’s that workin’ for you?” from the unfortunate phenomena that is Dr. Phil, can help.

But the outside stuff doesn’t always stick. Even Oprah, with her billions and billions of dollars, oftentimes can’t even make her own advice stick to her own life, for goodness sake.

So…the spiritual wisdom that god carefully stores in our hearts is quite the gift. It’s all a matter of paying attention to how god speaks to us and to listening.

And god speaks to different people in different ways…. Perhaps he uses a snippet of poetry, a walk by the ocean, a beautiful work of art, a beloved pet or a favorite song to get his message across.

We all have many treasures like these stored in our hearts. Be still therefore and learn and listen to them…they are your secret library of spiritual knowledge.
